The Airbus A320 changed commercial aviation forever. When it entered service with Air France in 1988, it brought fly-by-wire flight controls to passenger jets for the first time — a technology borrowed directly from military fighters. Today the A320 family is one of the most ordered aircraft series in history, with over 10,000 deliveries across all variants.
History
Airbus conceived the A320 in the early 1980s as a direct competitor to the Boeing 737 and 727. The aircraft made its first flight on February 22, 1987, and entered commercial service in April 1988. From the start, it stood apart from competitors.
The key innovations were structural:
- Fly-by-wire flight controls — pilot inputs go through computers before reaching control surfaces, allowing the system to prevent dangerous maneuvers
- Side-stick controllers instead of traditional yokes — freeing up the instrument panel and giving pilots more legroom
- Full glass cockpit — an all-digital instrument display replacing conventional dials

The A320 became the center of the widest-selling narrow-body family in aviation:

The shared cockpit across all variants means pilots certified on one can fly any other with minimal additional training — a major cost saving for airlines.
What Makes It Special
The A320’s fly-by-wire system introduced flight envelope protection, which prevents pilots from accidentally exceeding structural limits. The aircraft simply won’t roll past a certain bank angle or pull too many G-forces. Critics called it dangerous when it launched, worried that pilots would lose skills. Forty years later, the technology has become the industry standard.
The FMGC (Flight Management and Guidance Computer) and autoflight systems were also ahead of their time, making the A320 the first truly “computer-managed” airliner most passengers ever flew on.
In Service Today
Original A320s continue to fly on busy short-haul routes across Europe, Asia, and the Americas. While the A320neo (new engine option) is now the primary production model, thousands of classic A320s remain in service.
Spotting Tips
- Nose: The A320 has a more rounded, bulbous nose compared to the 737’s slightly pointed profile
- Engine shape: Fully circular nacelles — contrast with the slightly oval CFM56 nacelles on the 737
- Wingtips: Earlier A320s have either no wingtip devices or small winglets; newer aircraft have “sharklets”
- Fuselage cross-section: The A320’s wider cabin (3.96 m vs 3.53 m for the 737) means no truly narrow middle seat in a 3-3 config
